Hair How-To: Beach Wave Curls

How to get that Beachy Wave Look

by Meredith Davis

Whether you are traveling or staying local, beach hair is the next best thing to a day at the beach. Simple and maintenance-free, beach hair gives you that textured, bed-head look, which also separates and defines curls and gives body to straight hair.

We teamed up with Blo Blow Dry Bar to get a tutorial on how to create this beachy wave look at home. Also known as ‘Pillow Talk’ on the Blo menu, this style is easy to do and gives you soft, glamorous waves for a romantic, sexy and flirty look all wrapped into one.

Tweetable: The trick to beach wave curls is to create a center part and always curl away from your face. @Austin_Beauty

Beach Wave Steps:

  1. Spray your hair with a volumizing spray while it’s wet, then blowdry your hair upside down or with a large round brush.
  2. Create a center part down the back of your head and split your hair into two large sections, clipping one section to the side.  Then grab a large (2-inch) section of hair out of the back, wrap the hair around the barrel of the curling iron and hold for a few seconds. Release the hair from the curling iron and let it sit. Do not break up the curl.

Tip: Use a ½ inch to 1-inch curling iron.

  3. Take another section of hair and curl this the same way. Repeat these steps with the rest of the hair in the back.
  4. What’s essential for this look is the front center part. Separate it down the center and off that center part, create a large triangle section down towards your ear. Grab your curling iron, place it vertical at the root (with the curling iron clip facing out), slide it down towards your ends and curl away from the face.

Tip: Always curl away from the face.

  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. From far away, lightly mist your hair with hairspray. Comb the wave out a bit. When you get the look that you want, lightly mist it again to set it.
