Summer Sun Safety Tips

For some, Memorial Day weekend means remembering and honoring those who have fought for our country, but for most, it means good times and fun in the sun. Memorial weekend officially kicks off the summer bringing lazy days, pool parties, and beach vacations.  Some time spent in the sun is not only beneficial for our bronzed glow, but it is also good for our health, giving us the daily supply of vitamin D that our bodies need.  But, too much sun can be extremely harmful to our skin and overall health, causing long-term risks.

Exposure to UV light from the sun accounts for 90% of the symptoms of early skin aging, skin damage, and skin cancer. Not only that, but skin cancer is the most common type of cancer found in the United States and is also one of the most preventable. Take certain safety steps now, and your skin will thank you later.

Since you’ll likely be celebrating in the sun this weekend, prepare yourself with a few sun safety steps and quick tips for skin care and UV protection.

Sun Protection Factor

SPF and sunscreens have new rules for coverage. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has created new regulations for the labeling of sunscreens. Not all sunscreens are created equal, and the FDA has now established standards for testing the effectiveness of sunscreen products and requires labeling that accurately reflects test results.

Make sure you select a “broad-spectrum” SPF of at least 30 or higher, and apply it 30 minutes prior to sun exposure. Sunscreens not labeled as broad-spectrum are not effective for protecting against skin damage. It is also important to choose cosmetic products that offer a broad-spectrum SPF coverage.

Cover Up

It is important to avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible, and to do that, you must cover up. Ok, I don’t mean cover all the way up, but wearing a hat and sunglasses can save face. Not to mention, it can be trendy. Choose a fun beach hat and some big sunglasses (with UV protection) and rock your style like the diva you are. Note that peak UV radiation hours are between 10:00am and 3:00pm, so if you don’t like the coverage, try to avoid direct sun exposure during these times.
